It is no easy feat raising the funds to finance a movie in South Africa (unless it toes a certain line). But since Jamie Uys and Leon Schuster made their fortunes with candid camera style comedies, far less people have tried to emulate this cheaply produced but high audience draw formula than one would expect. Here the gang of movie-makers tap into the usual set-ups to catch people for cheap laughs, mostly by getting their blood pressure up and aggravating them to breaking point – from selling bootleg DVDs in front of a video store and a clumsy shop assistant dropping someone's new TV set, to bumping into a local singer's rental car and cutting the queue at a supermarket. There is an art to it after all, as the unsuspecting set-ups of the public need to have the desired reaction from them in order to succeed, hence the characters' constant pushing of the wind-up to escalate the situation.
Quite hit & miss, but at times you cannot help but laugh at people's reactions to these scenarios.
Intelligent comedy this is not, but rather a frivolous escape from the daily grind.
While pushed as an Afrikaans movie (translated as I'm Only Joking) to tap into that market, the basics of the scenes can transcend any language as universal human behaviour is at the core.
